The members of the panel are Professor Robert Brigham (Vassar), Professor Glenda Gilmore (Yale), Professor Tim Meagher (American Catholic University), and Dr Sandra Scanlon (UCD).
The discussion will be moderated by Professor Richard Aldous (Bard College).

The UCD School of History has a rich tradition in teaching and researching in American history. Since 1976, the School has hosted the Mary Ball Washington Chair in American History. It was initiated by the American ambassador to Ireland, John Moore. His brother, Richard A. Moore, gave further support to the Chair while serving as American ambassador in Dublin between 1989 and 1992. Since the 1970s, thousands of students at UCD have taken classes taught by holders of the Mary Ball Washington Chair.
As well as discussing changing understandings of American history and America’s role in a changing world, this panel discussion will reflect on the challenges and benefits of teaching American history in UCD and in particular, the influential part which the Mary Ball Chair in American History has played in introducing America to Irish students.
